Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)

Education services for children and young people with SEND

Children learn and progress at different rates.

Some children with special educational needs and disabilities may need more help than others to move forward.

If you have any questions about your child's education, speak to their setting or school in the first instance. If you need more information after speaking to the setting or school, you can contact our SEND service - email send@rutland.gov.uk or call 01572 758280.

Our SEND Strategy Summary sets out our education vision for SEND children and young people in Rutland.

You can find information and advice on all aspects of education and other services for children and young people with SEND on the Local Offer website:

SEND Peer Challenge Report

We had a week-long peer review of our SEND and inclusion service in September 2022.

A peer review is where Independent experts with specialist knowledge are invited to visit a local authority to review services available from councils and the partners they work with. The review is done voluntarily to help:

  • assess and challenge how services are run
  • highlight strengths
  • identify any areas for development

Five independent reviewers from outside Rutland, including a reviewer who's also a parent and carer, were asked to:

  • assess the lived experiences of children with SEND and their families in the county
  • test Rutland's multi-agency response to families
  • assess the quality of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
