Helping to keep your child in school

All children, regardless of their circumstances, are entitled to a full-time education which is suitable to their age, ability, aptitude, and any special educational needs they may have either by regular school attendance or otherwise.  

The Inclusion team work together with schools, families and children and young people to promote inclusive practices, provide guidance and support to ensure that every child and young person can access and be included in their education regardless of their individual needs, background or circumstances.

How the Inclusion team can help:

  • Meeting regularly with schools and organising training and practice sharing sessions
  • Support first approach -providing resources and training such as Inclusive Mainstream Practice (IMP) and Anxiety Related Non Attendance (ARNA) tool and action plan which enable schools to support children and young people; Signposting resources for families and schools; meeting regularly with schools to discuss cases of concern.  
  • Monitoring data on attendance, sickness, unauthorised absence, suspension and exclusion and reduced timetables.
  • Providing guidance and, where required, intervention for children not attending school or at risk of permanent exclusion.
  • Using the legal framework for those taking unauthorised leave during term time and as a last resort where parents fail to ensure their child attends school regularly.
  • Identifying and quality assuring alternative provisions.

  • Fulfilling the LA duty to support education for those children who are unable to attend school due to medical conditions or other reasons, are waiting for a school place or those who have been excluded. 

Elective Home Education (EHE)

  • Engage with the local EHE community

  • Working with families in a positive way to ensure that children are receiving their educational entitlement

  • Work with families to improve education where it is unsuitable

  • Use legal tools as a last resort where it appears that children and young people are not receiving a suitable education

  • Provide services for licencing for children who perform and chaperone licences for adults supervising children during these activities.
