The Rutland SEND Promise

The Rutland SEND Promise has been written and agreed by a group of parent/carers in partnership with Rutland County Council staff. The Promise refers to families and those who work with them. It is designed to build trust and keep children and young people at the centre of everything we do.

How we communicate:

• When we communicate with each other, we will endeavour to treat each other with dignity and respect. We will be honest, open, clear, jargon free, polite, and kind.

• The SEND team will support families and will respond to emails, or messages (via SEND Duty email SEND@rutland.gov.uk or phone line 01572 758280) as soon as possible and at least within 5 working days.

• The SEND team may sometimes have to deliver difficult messages on behalf of the Local Authority - these will be delivered in a respectful manner. Parents are asked to respond in a similar way.

• Local Authority staff will do what they say they will do, when they say they will do it - if they can’t, they will explain why. Parents are asked to do the same.

• We will all endeavour to respect each other’s time by considering when we make contact and when we expect a response.

• We will all use social media responsibly, respecting the privacy of workers, families and children and young people.

• As parent/carers we are encouraged to approach the Local Authority to gain clarity and understanding regarding any concerns about SEND. Sources of support to do this are on the Local Offer.

• The Local Offer will have good, clear information for families and children and young people.

How things work:

• We all understand that Rutland County Council are bound by the SEND Code of Practice and the processes within it

• Children, young people and their families will be clear about the support that has been agreed, when they will get it, and from whom

• Children, young people and their families will be clear about how the decisions about their support are made

• Local Authority staff will be enabled to give equal priority to all children

Relationships:

• Children, young people and their families will be listened to and taken seriously

• We all value good relationships

• Local authority staff and families understand that every family and every child is different and will treat each person as an individual - working together in ways that best suit each family and each child so that tailored support can be put in place

• Local Authority staff will all use a range of ways to get to know families to help create a positive relationship

Whole Life:

• Local Authority staff recognise that life for families continues out of school hours and that by supporting parent/carers they are enabling them to support their children

• Together we will build a whole picture of the child or young person using expertise from themselves, professionals and key people in their lives

• We will all work in partnership to help children and young people flourish and achieve
