I have an extensive and varied background in mental health, safeguarding and working with vulnerable young people from all backgrounds who have experienced mental health issues, trauma, and loss.
A couple of years ago, I was a volunteer Counsellor at ChildLine supporting children with a variety of different issues, including depression, anxiety, abuse, suicidal feelings, trauma, and self- harm. My responsibility was to make the young person feel comfortable enough to open up and to establish trust, while additionally helping them understand their issues and making them feel heard and supported.
I have worked at a therapeutic Independent School which supports SEN pupils and young people with existing attachment and past trauma experiences. This included teaching young people subjects such as Maths and English on a 1:1 basis. My role was to create an environment that facilitates healthy relationship development and helps the young people to build trust. I used skills such as empathy and active listening to support the children, whilst also being resilient when dealing with challenging behaviour.
I am an individual that likes a challenge and I consider myself to be a good listener and able to build up a meaningful and reciprocal relationship so the person feels valued.
