Using a personal assistant to provide your support via a personal budget

Some families will be eligible for a personal budget via the Aiming High Short Breaks Scheme or via Children with disabilities Social Care. Adults with care and support needs may be eligible for a regular payment from Adult Services so they can arrange their support themselves. Having a personal budget as a direct payment can give choice and control to those who need support.

Many people choose to employ a personal assistant to provide the support they need and look to recruit from the Rutland PA Network which includes people who work with children, young people and/or adults. You should make contact directly with a potential PA using their contact details on their record.

However, you can also choose to recruit a personal assistant from your local community and advertise at the local school, shop, community centre or Job Centre.

You may employ a friend or family member, excluding those who live in your household, but families should also consider what the normal, unpaid level of support they may expect from that friend or family member.
