VE Day road closure applications

We're offering assistance to residents who wish to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe), which falls on 8 May 2025.

This is an opportunity for the nation to come together to honour and pay tribute to the Second World War generation from across the UK and Commonwealth, through a series of national and local events and activities.

To help our communities celebrate, we are offering support to arrange road closures for street parties and other commemorations.

Holding street parties

Communities are encouraged to hold parties in gardens or public open spaces where possible, rather than on the highway, to ensure that emergency vehicles and residents with work commitments can safely travel.

Applying for a road closure

Where communities do wish to hold a party in a street or road, you need to notify us of your plans by midday on Thursday 17 April, so that any safety or other impacts can be assessed, and the closure can be advertised, as required by law.

Applications for road closures for street parties on Sunday 4 May and Monday 5 May that do not require diversions will not incur a charge from the council, if they are received by 17 April.

Closure applications should not be made for A, B or C roads as these will normally require diversion routes to be put in place.

Submitting your application

Communities that are planning to hold street parties as part of their commemorations and require a temporary road closure can apply by emailing: highways@rutland.gov.uk or calling: 01572 722 577.

Deadlines

The deadline to allow the council to legally advertise the road closure order will be midday in 17 April. Any applications received after this date unfortunately cannot be granted, given the legal time for such orders to be placed.

Planning your event

We'll discuss any specific requirements with event organisers once your road closure application is received.

Each community will be responsible for their own traffic management of road closures, where these are agreed. We can provide traffic cones at cost if required.

Please be mindful that closures should last no longer than the one day. Any furniture and traffic management equipment must be removed to allow free use of the carriageway as soon as celebrations conclude, and at the end of Sunday 4 May or Monday 5 May at the latest.
