Register for the Green Waste Collection Service

We are accepting payments for the current subscription year until the 31st Dec 2018. After this date it will no longer be possible to sign up for the current year.

In February 2019 we will be accepting payments for the new subscription year, starting 1st April 2019.

Any payment for the current subscription year is for the full subscription amount of £35 and this will cover collections up to the 31st March 2019.

Your Green Waste Collection Service

We know that green waste collections are a valued service in Rutland.

Unfortunately, due to increasing financial pressure, we cannot continue to subsidise these collections in order to make them free of charge.

As a result, from 1st April 2018 households that would like to continue using their green bins to dispose of garden waste will be asked to pay an annual charge of £35 per bin.

Green Bin Stickers

If you've subscribed to the Green Waste Collection Service you'll receive one sticker for each green bin that you have registered for.

Once received, please follow these steps:

  • Write your house number and street name on each sticker in the space provided
  • Place each sticker on the back of each green bin, just below the handles, as shown here
  • By 7am on collection days, place each green bin at the edge of your property with the handles facing the road

Each sticker also includes a reminder about what you should and shouldn't put in your green bin.

If you have any questions or queries, please contact us by emailing: greenwaste@rutland.gov.uk or calling: 01572 758 488. Please quote your unique reference for your property.

It’s not too late to sign up for the green waste service if you’d like to carry on using your green bin.

You can do this online, by calling 01572 758 488 or in person at our offices in Oakham.

Please read our full Terms and Conditions before registering for the Green Waste Collection Service.

If you don't wish to sign up for the green waste service your green bin will not be emptied after 31st March 2018, in which case you could consider Home Composting or taking your green waste to one of our Civic Amenity Sites.

About the Green Waste Service

Below you will find answers to some of the most common questions about the Green Waste Collection Service.

If I sign up to the service, are there any changes to the arrangements for emptying the green bins and will my collection day change?
No, the Council will continue to collect your Green Waste at the same frequency and it is not expected that there will be any change to collection days. The Council’s standard waste collection arrangements apply, including regarding contamination, the lid being closed, side waste, the weight of the green bin(s) and the time that your green bin(s) is out.

What if I want more than one green bin?
You can have more than one green bin under the new Service, with each one costing £35 for the year.

How will you know to empty my green bin?
You will be sent a sticker for each green bin subscribed for and only green bins displaying these stickers will be emptied.

When can I sign up?
To ensure that your green bin is emptied from 1st April 2018 you should sign up for the service between Monday 22nd January and Friday 2nd March.

You can sign up for the 2018/19 service later and up until 31st December 2018. If you sign up part way through the year the full annual cost will apply.

Can I cancel my subscription part way through the year?
Yes, but no refunds will be given for cancelled subscriptions.

Are there any concessions available?
A 25% discount is available if someone living in your property is in receipt of local Council Tax support.

If you believe that your property is eligible for this local Council Tax support concession, please telephone the Council on 01572 758 488 or visit us at Catmose, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 6HP so we can check this eligibility. No other concessions are available.

Why can’t the charge just be added to my Council Tax bill?
Council Tax bills (officially called demand notices) must comply with national Council Tax administration and enforcement regulations. These regulations tell local councils what information must be included in the demand notice and do not allow us to include any other charges, such as the charge for green waste collection, to your bill.

What if I currently have an assisted collection?
If you currently have an assisted collection, this will continue.

Can I share a green bin with my neighbours?
No, your green bin(s) must only be used for Green Waste from your own property.

Will you issue new green bins or take old ones away?
No. You will continue to use any green bin(s) currently at your property. If you have more green bins than you need the extra bins should be kept at your property. If you need an additional green bin(s) this will be delivered to you.

What if I need a replacement green bin?
If you need a replacement green bin(s), this will be provided, but a charge may be applied.

What if I move house?
Your subscription is tied to the property and not an individual, so if you move house, you must leave any green bin(s) at the property.
