Guide to bins

Green bin guide

Your green bin is for garden waste, such as leaves, grass cuttings and hedge trimmings.

You need to sign up to our green waste subscription service to have your green bin collected.

All garden waste should be loose, not bagged or wrapped.

Please do not overfill your bin or cram the waste in - this makes it difficult to empty the bin properly. Your bin lid should be closed flat. You can take any extra green waste to our household waste and recycling centres.

Your bin won't be emptied if it's too heavy to move safely.

The green waste we collect is sent for composting.

Items you can put in your green bin:

  • grass cuttings
  • hedge trimmings
  • twigs and small branches
  • leaves and bark
  • plants - you will need to shake the soil off the roots first
  • prunings

Items you cannot put in your green bin:

  • plastic of any kind
  • large quantities of soil
  • bricks, rubble, garden stone, rocks or pebbles
  • household waste
  • animal waste, including bedding
  • food waste

We cannot compost garden stones or soil - you can take these to our household waste and recycling centres.

Collection

Your bin must be put out for collection at your property boundary by 6.30am on your collection day.

You must move your bin back to its usual storage place by the end of the collection day, as it may obstruct the road and look untidy.
