The application process for transferring from primary school to secondary school in September 2022 is now underway and parents/carers have until the national closing date of 31 October 2021 to submit an application for their child. Please note that it does not matter how soon you submit your application as long as you submit it by the closing date. All applications received by the closing date will be treated equally. However, if you submit your application after the closing date it will be processed as a late application and this could result in your child not receiving an offer at your preferred school
We have used information from our pupil database to target those children who are in their final year at primary school and a letter has been sent to parents/carers of Rutland resident children, advising them of the need to apply for a secondary school place for their child. If you live in Rutland but have not received a letter from us, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can check that we have your child's details and that they are correct. Each local authority is responsible for coordinating the secondary school admissions process for children resident within their local authority area. This means that you must submit an application to the Council where you live, even if you want to apply for a place at a school in another local authority area. For example, if you live in Rutland but want to apply for a secondary school in another county, you must submit your application to us. If you live in another county but want to apply for a place at a Rutland secondary school, you must submit your application to the Council where you live.
To assist you, we have published a Secondary School Admissions Brochure which explains the process of applying for a secondary school place along with other helpful information including details about Rutland secondary schools and school transport. It is important that you read the information contained in the brochure before submitting your application to ensure that you are aware of your preferred schools' admission arrangements (policy), to check eligibility for school transport and to make sure that all necessary information is included in your application.
The national closing date for applications is 31 October 2021
You can submit your application online using our Admissions Portal by following the 'Apply Online' link below. Online applications must be submitted by 23:59 on 31 October 2021.
If you would prefer to submit a paper application, you can print out and complete the Secondary School Application Form September 2022 or contact us to ask for a copy to be posted out to you. Paper applications must be received at the Council offices at Catmose by 4.00pm on 31 October 2021. Please note that if you submit your application using the paper application form, you will receive your child's school offer later than those parents who submit their application using the Admissions Portal as you will have to wait for your offer to be delivered by post.
The national offer day will be 1 March 2022. The national offer day ensures that offers of places are sent out on the same day to all parents throughout the country. If you submit your application online your offer will be available to view on the Admissions Portal from 00:01 on the morning of offer day. In addition, an automated email will be sent to you on the morning of offer day, at approximately 8.00am, providing you with details of the school that has been offered to your child. If you submit a paper application, your offer will be sent by first class post on offer day. As a result, parents who submit their application online will receive their offer before those who submit a paper application.
If you are planning to send your child to a private or independent school, you should not use the local authority application form but should instead contact the preferred school direct. If you intend to apply for a place for your child at an independent school, please let us know so that we can update your child's details accordingly.

Before submitting your application, it is important to note that the application form will allow you to submit up to 3 preferences of secondary school. We strongly encourage you to use all 3 preferences so that your child has the best opportunity of receiving an offer at a preferred school. Submitting a second and third preference will in no way affect your changes of receiving an offer at your first preference school. The video below explains how your preferences will be processed.
