If your child was born between 1 September 2018 and 31 August 2019 they will be eligible to start primary school in September 2023.
The application process for starting primary school for the first time in September 2023 is now underway and parents/carers have until the national closing date of 15 January 2023 to submit an application for their child. Please note that it does not matter how soon you submit your application as long as you submit it by the closing date. All applications received by the closing date will be treated equally. However, if you submit your application after the closing date it will be processed as a late application and this could result in your child not receiving an offer at your preferred school.
We have collected information from our early years settings in the county in order to target children who are eligible to start primary school and a letter has been sent to parents/carers of Rutland resident children, advising them of the need to apply for a primary school place for their child. If you live in Rutland but have not received a letter from us, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can check that we have your child's details and that they are correct.

Each local authority is responsible for co-ordinating the primary school admissions process for children resident within their local authority area. This means that you must submit an application to the Council where you live, even if you want to apply for a place at a school in another local authority area. For example, if you live in Rutland but would like to apply for a primary school in another county, you must submit your application to us. Alternatively, if you live in another county but want to apply for a place at a Rutland primary school, you must submit your application to the Council where you live. Please check your own Council's website for details.
To assist you in the application process, we have produced a primary school admissions brochure which explains the process of applying for a primary school place, along with information about primary schools in the Rutland area and where you can find further information. It is important that you read the information contained in the brochure before submitting your application to ensure that you are aware of your preferred school's admission arrangements (policy), to check eligibility for school transport and to make sure that all necessary information is included within your application. We have also produced a short video, which can be found at the bottom of this page, which explains how your application will be processed.
Before submitting your application it is important to note that the application form will allow you to submit up to 3 preferences of primary school. We strongly encourage you to use all 3 preferences so that your child has the best opportunity of receiving an offer at a preferred school. Submitting a second and third preference will in no way affect your chances of receiving an offer at your first preference school. The video below explains how your preferences will be processed.
The national closing date for applications is 15 January 2023
You can submit your application online using our Admissions Portal by following the 'Apply Online' link below. Online applications must be submitted by 23:59 on 15 January 2023.
If you would prefer to submit a paper application, you can print out and complete the Primary School Application Form September 2023 or contact us to ask for a copy to be posted out to you. Paper applications must be received at the Council Offices at Catmose by 4.00pm on 15 January 2023. Please note that if you submit your application using the paper application form, you will receive your child's school offer later than those parents who submit their application via the Admissions Portal as you will have to wait for your offer letter to be delivered by post.
The national offer day will be 17 April 2023. The national offer day ensures that offers of places are sent out on the same day to all parents throughout the country. If you submit your application online your offer will be available to view on the Admissions Portal from 00:01 on the morning of offer day. In addition, an automated email will be sent to you on the morning of offer day providing you with details of the school that has been offered to your child. If you submit a paper application, your offer will be sent by first class post on offer day. As a result, parents who submit their application online will receive their offer before those who submit a paper application.
If you are planning to send your child to a private or independent school, you should not use the local authority application form but should instead contact the preferred school direct. If you do intend to apply for a place for your child at an independent school, please let us know so that we can update your child's details accordingly.
There is an option for parents whose child was born between 1 April 2019 and 31 August 2019 to delay their child's start at primary school until September 2024. To assist parents who may be considering this option we have produced guidance on deferred entry and there is also guidance on the Gov.UK website.
