How is my benefit worked out?

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support are means tested financial help towards your rent and council tax.

If you receive Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance (Income Based), or Employment & Support Allowance (Income Related) you will receive the maximum eligible Housing Benefit plus Council Tax Support based on 75% of your council tax charge. If you receive Pension Credit Guarantee you will receive the maximum eligible Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support.

If you receive other benefits or are on a low income we carry out a means test. This means we compare the money you and your partner have coming in against the income we don’t have to count plus an allowance that the Government says you need to live on. This allowance is different depending on the size of your family and whether anyone is disabled.

The higher your income that we count when compared to this allowance the less Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support you get.

Use the online Benefits Calculator to find out what you are entitled to claim.

Additional points to note

The amount of benefit you get will also be affected by:

  • Any capital, savings, or investments you or your partner have

  • Any other adults who live with you.
