Healthy eating and losing weight

A balanced nutritional diet is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Combined with physical activity your diet can help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer and improve your overall health.

The following tips can help you to eat healthily and lose weight:

  • Base your meals on starchy carbohydrates, like potatoes, bread and pasta and choose wholegrain varieties wherever possible
  • Eat lots of fruit and vegetables
  • Eat more fish – including a portion of oily fish each week
  • Cut down on saturated fat and sugar
  • Eat less salt – no more than 6g a day for adults
  • Get active and be a healthy weight
  • Drink plenty of water so you don’t get thirsty
  • Don’t skip breakfast
