Covid-19 vaccine

The 2024 Covid-19 spring vaccination programme will begin vaccinating eligible cohorts from April 15 2024, onwards.

From Monday 15 April vaccinations will begin in care homes and the National Booking Service and 119 lines will open for eligible cohorts to book a vaccination appointment from 22 April 2024.

It is important that everyone who is eligible takes up the vaccine offer this spring. The current vaccines provide good protection against severe disease, hospitalisation, and can protect those that are most vulnerable from death.

Who is eligible?

The following people are eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine:

are aged 75 years old or over
live in a care home for older adults
are aged 6 months old or over and have a weakened immune system

Where eligible people can get vaccinated in LLR

Immunosuppressed children aged 6 months to 18 years of age can only get vaccinated at the specialist clinic at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Parents/guardians can check eligibility of children by clicking here.
Adults 75 and over can get vaccinated at any of our bookable or walk-in clinics.
Care home residents and housebound people will be contacted by the NHS.

Why should I get vaccinated?

The Covid-19 vaccination programme provides vital protection to those eligible and their families, keeping people from developing serious illnesses. COVID-19 is more serious in older people and in people with certain underlying health conditions so it’s improtant to take up the offer of a vaccine if you’re eligiable.

The protection offered by each dose of the Covid-19 vaccine reduces over time and therefore it is very important that eligible people take up the offer of the next seasonal dose, in order to receive maximum protection.

What vaccine will I recieve

Eligible individuals will be given a vaccine made by Pfizer or Moderna and approved in the These vaccines have been updated since the original vaccines and target a different Covid- 19 variant. These updated vaccines boost protection well and give slightly higher levels of antibody against the more recent strains of Covid-19 (Omicron).
