Family support from early help services

Early help is not a single service - it's a range of services, processes and interactions that aim to help children, young people and their families at the earliest opportunity.

Early help offers support to families who'd like help to overcome any difficulties they're facing, before they become more serious . It's about getting the right support at the right time.

Early help can be provided by different professionals and services, often by someone the family already knows - a teacher or health visitor, for example.

If you feel your family may benefit from early help support, you can ask any professional you feel comfortable talking to complete an early help assessment with you. An Early Help Assessment is a way of gathering and sharing information about the things that are working well for your family, and the things you might need help with.

Team Around the Family

After the assessment, you may be invited to take part in a Team Around the Family meeting (TAF). TAF is a way of getting everyone involved together to agree a plan of support and make sure everyone works together to achieve the same goals.

How to get early help

You can ask a professional to complete a Multi-Agency Referral Form (MARF), or you can contact us - email earlyhelp@rutland.gov.uk or call 01572 758 493.

Services

These services are available for all families with children aged 0 to 19, or up to 25 if they have a special educational need or disability:

These group works programmes are for families who have been referred by a professional completing a MARF:

  • Living with Children and Teens - a six-week group work programme for parents struggling with their child's behaviour
  • Family Transitions - a five-week positive parenting programme for parents who are separating or already separated that are experiencing high levels of disagreement
  • 8 to 12 weeks of one to one mentoring support for young people aged 11 to 18. Our mentors are trained and experienced youth workers who help young people find ways to deal with situations and feelings they're worried or concerned about - bullying or not getting on with their family or friends, for example
  • support groups and services for young carers aged 5 to 19

Enhanced family support

If your family is facing more difficult challenges and have several issues you're trying to deal with, a professional may suggest completing a MARF. We can then think about any extra support you may need.

Services include:

  • Team Around the Family support - provided by an early help worker who will work with your family to help make positive changes
  • 8 to 12 weeks of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy based support with a qualified wellbeing practitioner, for 8 to 18 year olds with emerging mental health or emotional wellbeing difficulties including anxiety, phobia and low mood
  • Youth Justice Service support - for 10 to 17 year olds who may be or are at risk of being involved with crime
  • Relationships Matter - support for families who live together where arguing's become more frequent and family conflict is high and unresolved
