Local Housing Allowance (LHA)

Local Housing Allowance (LHA) is the way we work out the rent we can use in your claim for Housing Benefit if you rent from a private landlord. We will use the lower of either your rent or the LHA rate that applies to you and your family.

Calculate how many bedrooms you and your family are entitled to

then use that to

Work out your LHA rate

If you are single and aged under 35 you will only get the shared room rate.

Remember this only tells you how much of your rent we can use when we work out your Housing Benefit. It doesn’t tell you how much Housing Benefit we will pay you as we may still have to carry out a means test.
