Rutland Leaders Back National Campaign for Rural Strategy

Date Published: 19 March 2019

Rutland MP Sir Alan Duncan and Rutland County Council’s Cabinet are to back a national campaign to appeal to Government to develop a Rural Strategy.

On 19 March 2019, Rutland County Council’s Cabinet agreed unanimously to support the campaign led by the Rural Services Network

“For too long rural issues have been overlooked when setting national policy, and I believe a Rural Strategy is needed to ensure this is rebalanced. I have long campaigned for rural areas and my constituency, to have their issues recognised and reflected in national policy. The issues affecting rural areas are of equal importance to those affecting urban centres, and the appropriate funding and resources need to be put in place to address them.”
Sir Alan Duncan, MP for Rutland and Melton

The Rural Strategy campaign calls on Government to take the lead in working with other interested organisations to produce a comprehensive, long-term and funded strategy Rural Strategy that ensures rural areas have:

RSN Rural Strategy
  • A thriving rural economy
  • A digitally connected countryside
  • A place everyone can get around
  • Affordable places to live
  • A fair deal on health and social care
  • A place to learn and grow
  • A financial settlement from Government that supports local action and includes fair funding for rural services
  • A rural-proofed policy framework

“I believe it is vital for Rutland County Council to back this campaign, which seeks to highlight to Government the need for more considered thinking about rural issues when developing national policy. The issues affecting rural areas, such as Rutland, are somewhat different to those affecting urban localities, which, as we have seen over the years, leads to a disproportionate allocation of funding and support, unfairly disadvantaging rural communities.”
Oliver Hemsley, Leader of Rutland County Council
