Exhibition Explores Education Through the Ages

Date Published: 26 September 2019
Back to School

Rutland County Museum is holding a fascinating new exhibition all about the history of Rutland’s village schools.

Called ‘Back to School’, the exhibition explores village schooling throughout the Victorian period and into the 1920s. It features old photographs, certificates and awards, as well as exercise books, school work and samplers.

Back to School is part of a special series of exhibitions being held to celebrate Rutland County Museum’s 50th Anniversary and runs until 23 November 2019.

Rutland County Museum first opened its doors in May 1969 following ten years of campaigning and fundraising by local charity Friends of Rutland County Museum.

“This is a fascinating look back at what school life was like for children growing up in Rutland more than 100 years ago. Rutland County Museum has always been a great asset for our local schools so it’s apt that we’re choosing our 50th anniversary to look back at education over the years. Going to school is something that we all have in common. Whatever your age, I’m sure this is one exhibition that will strike a chord with everyone.”
Councillor Lucy Stephenson, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure

Other events taking place this year to mark 50 years of Rutland County Museum include a free 50th birthday celebration taking place on 11 October, as well as an Anglo-Saxon-themed family day on 23 October.
