Centrebus Ltd has been awarded a five-year contract to continue operating Rutland’s RF1 bus service, which will now also serve Corby railway station.
RF1 runs from Melton to Corby via Oakham and Uppingham and is one of Rutland’s most popular bus routes, with more than 120,000 passenger journeys last year.
Rutland County Council began a procurement exercise to identify a new operator to run the RF1 service in March 2018. This followed a decision by Centrebus to cancel its existing contract, citing reduced funding from Northamptonshire County Council and the need to reassess whether RF1 was still commercially viability.
After considering the tender responses to the initial procurement exercise, Rutland’s Cabinet authorised additional funding for RF1 but asked Officers to look again at whether a more cost effective solution could be found. A second exercise returned two bids and has resulted in a new contract being awarded to Centrebus.
As part of the new five-year contract, the route for RF1 is to be extended to include an additional stop at Corby railway station. This was requested in response to comments from service users and County Councillors. A revised timetable for the service detailing this change will be introduced from September 2018.
“The Council has worked hard to protect RF1 for the passengers who rely on this service. We’ve held a thorough procurement process which set out to ensure the continued operation of RF1 while also delivering best possible value for public money. I hope residents and, in particular, RF1 users will be pleased that we have been able to do both. We have increased funding for RF1 to keep the service running and improve the route – something that has only been possible because of prudent financial management and making best use of our limited resources.”
Councillor Lucy Stephenson, Portfolio Holder for Transport
The five-year contract to operate RF1 has been awarded to Centrebus Ltd at a value of £122,000 per year and commences from 24 September 2018.
