Audit Finds that Council Offers Value for Money

Council Budget 2017

Rutland County Council has been given a clean bill of health for its financial resilience following its latest annual audit.

External auditor KPMG LLP has undertaken its annual examination of the Council’s economy, effectiveness and efficiency in relation to its use of public funds – known as a Value for Money Audit (VFM) – and has stated: “We are satisfied…that there were adequate arrangements in place at 31 March 2018 and there are no significant matters relating to this risk area which prevent us from giving an unqualified VFM conclusion.”

The audit provides confidence to Councillors and the residents of Rutland that the Council is managing its finances well, is aware of the risks ahead and is spending public money appropriately.

Following the audit, Rutland County Council’s Audit and Risk Committee has now approved the Council’s financial accounts - two months earlier than last year in line with a new statutory deadline.

“We are pleased that the auditors recognise our financial resilience. Having external recognition from KPMG LLP - an organisation that audits many councils – which has verified we are operating in a professional manner and managing our finances appropriately, renews our confidence in how we face our future budgetary challenges, but we are not complacent. With over £3.6m of core funding already lost since 2015, the Government funding position is unknown beyond 2019/20 and the ongoing challenges presented by potential increased costs, including the demand for children’s services and adult social care, we know that we have to continue to manage our finances prudently and we will be looking at all aspects of spending and income generation whilst lobbying for a fair share of funding from central Government.”
Councillor Gordon Brown, Portfolio Holder for Finance
