Local residents will soon receive a Household Enquiry Form asking them to confirm the details of all those over 16 currently residing at the property.
The forms are being sent to every home in Rutland from 24th August 2017 as part of the Annual Canvass of Electors. The aim is for Rutland County Council to keep the electoral register up-to-date for all households and to help identify anyone who is not currently registered so they can be invited to do so.
“Anyone who wants to vote in future elections must have their details on the electoral register. Forms for the Annual Canvass will be arriving in the post in the coming weeks and occupiers are asked to confirm that the details of everyone living at their address and registered to vote are up to date. Please don’t ignore the letter – If your details are not up-to-date you may not be eligible to vote, so please respond as soon as possible to make sure that all your details remain correct. If you’re not currently registered, your name will not appear on the form. If you want to register, the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote, or we’ll send you information explaining how to do this in the post. In any case, you will still need to complete the form and send it back to us. Although voter registration was high due to the recent General Election, this is a separate statutory exercise that needs completing annually to confirm that electoral registration details remain correct.”Helen Briggs, the Electoral Registration Officer for Rutland
People who have recently moved address recently are particularly encouraged to keep an eye out for the form and check the details. Research by the independent Electoral Commission indicates that recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those that have lived at the same address for a long time. Across Great Britain, 96% of people who have been at their property for more than sixteen years will be registered, compared to 27% of people who have lived at an address for less than one year.
You can respond to the Canvass by text message, calling the freephone number provided on the form or by going online – further details will be provided on the Household Enquiry Form. Please note that the Council's Customer Services Team cannot take your details over the phone.
If all of the details for the household are correct this can be confirmed by using one of the methods detailed above – texting or phoning are the most effective and cost efficient response methods. If any details are incorrect, for example someone has moved away, follow the instructions on the form to update them.
If it is confirmed that there are no changes, no further correspondence will be sent as part of the canvass. Reminders will be sent to non-responding properties after 28 days and again, if necessary, a further 28 days after that. As part of the process, canvassers may also visit properties where no response has been received.
