Town and parish councils

The role town and parish councils play in local government and where to find contact details for your town or parish council

Town or parish councils are the first level of government.

They're independent of the Council, but maintain a close working relationship.

Parish powers vary depending on how large and how active they are.

Some meet infrequently (but at least four times a year, including one public meeting) and are responsible for very few matters.

Other larger parishes are responsible for many duties, for example:

  • street lighting
  • cemetery management
  • allotments
  • commons
  • village halls
  • war memorials
  • markets

Parish councils with a turnover not exceeding £25,000 must abide by the Department for Communities and Local Government's Transparency Code for Smaller Authorities.
