Upcoming elections

The election of councillors to serve on Rutland County Council takes place once every four years, on the first Thursday in May. 

The last Council election was held in May 2019.

Rutland County Council elections - 4 May 2023

Elections will only be held in contested wards - wards where there are more candidates nominated than there are seats available.

Nominations closed on 4 April 2023 and we now know which wards are contested and uncontested:

Please note, the count for this election will take place on Friday 5 May.

Voting

If your ward is contested, to vote in the election you must be registered to vote by midnight on Monday 17 April 2023.

If you want to vote in a polling station, you will need to produce valid photo ID - find out more about voter ID on the Electoral Commission website.

Postal and postal proxy voting

If the election is contested, we must receive your postal vote application by 5pm on Tuesday 18 April 2023 to vote by post,

If your proxy wants to vote by post, you must appoint them before they can apply to vote by post - make sure you leave enough time for this. The deadline for them to apply to vote by post as a proxy is 5pm on Tuesday 18 April 2023.

If contested, postal votes will be sent out on or around 14 April 2023.

From 27 April 2023, you can email elections@rutland.gov.uk or call the elections team if your postal vote:

• is lost
• is damaged - you'll need to return your damaged postal vote and bring proof of your identity to collect the replacement
• has been stolen
• has not arrived

If you want to cancel your postal vote, you'll need to put this in writing to us (including a wet ink signature) by 5pm on Tuesday 18 April 2023, or you will not be able to vote at your polling station. You can either:

• post your cancellation request to: Elections, Rutland County Council, Catmose, Oakham, Rutland LE15 6HP
• scan and email your cancellation request to: elections@rutland.gov.uk
• request a cancellation form: call 01572 720954

Proxy voting

If the election is contested, we must receive your application by 5pm on Tuesday 25 April 2023 to vote by proxy.

To change or cancel your proxy, you must email elections@rutland.gov.uk or call our elections team on 01572 720954 by 5pm on 18 April 2023. If you do not change or cancel your proxy vote by this date, your proxy will not be able to vote on your behalf at a polling station if the election is contested.

The election of town and parish councillors takes place once every four years, on the first Thursday in May.

Parish and town council elections - 22 June 2023

All four parish council elections due to be held on 22 June 2023 were uncontested. This means there was no election for those parishes on that day and the candidates put forward were elected uncontested.  The results of these uncontested elections can be found on our Election Results page.

General elections usually take place every five years. 

The last general election was held on 12 December 2019.

The latest date for the next general election to be held is 28 January 2025.

We will publish voter information on this page when an election is called.

Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections take place once every four years.

Elections for the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police and Crime Commissioner will take place on Thursday 2 May 2024. Details of candidates will be released, once known, and will be available on the Leicester City Council website by no later than 4pm on 8 April 2024. From 10 April 2024, you will be able to find out information on the candidates standing for election for the Leicestershire Police Force area at www.choosemypcc.org.uk and you will also be able to download a PDF booklet of the candidate details.

Voting Method

For the first time in their history, these elections will use the First Past the Post voting method.

Each local authority will count their own votes and provide their figures to Leicester City Council. Once all the results are collated, we will declare who is elected as PCC for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and this web page will be updated with the result.

Leicester City Council is the lead authority for the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police Area, which is covered by nine local authorities in total:

• Blaby District Council

• Charnwood Borough Council

• Harborough District Council

• Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council

• Leicester City Council

• Melton Borough Council

• North West Leicestershire District Council

• Oadby and Wigston Borough Council

• Rutland County Council

Information about the role of the PCC can be found on their website and information about the election can be found at leicspcc-election.co.uk.  Details about how to stand as a candidate in the PCC election can be found on the Leicester City Council website.  

To vote in this election you should be registered to vote by midnight on 16 April 2024.

Postal and postal proxy voting

To vote by post, you must be registered to vote first, then you can apply for a postal vote.  We must have received your postal vote application by 5pm on 17 April 2024.

If your proxy wants to vote by post, you must appoint them (see below) before they can apply to vote by post - make sure you leave enough time for this. The deadline for them to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on 17 April 2024.  They will need to contact the electoral services team using the details below for more details, and to request an appropriate application form.  

The first run of postal votes will be sent out on or around 15 April 2024 and for those applying for a postal vote after 2 April 2024 a second run of postal votes will be sent out on or around 23 April 2024.

If you are too late to send via Royal Mail you can also deliver yours and up to five other postal vote(s) by hand to:

• our Catmose offices, during office hours and up until 10pm on polling day (2 May 2024) – please note you can no longer simply post your postal vote through a council letter box or leave it at reception.  For a postal vote to be accepted you will need to ensure you speak to an authorised person in our reception area and complete a form.      More details about the revised regulations can be found on the Electoral Commission website. 
• the polling station, on polling day until 10pm (2 May 2024), where you will be required to complete a form with the Presiding Officer for your postal vote to be accepted.     

Please be aware that any postal votes delivered that are not accompanied by the required form must be rejected.

From 26 April 2024, you can email elections@rutland.gov.uk if your postal vote:

• is lost
• is damaged - you'll need to return your damaged postal vote and bring proof of your identity to collect the replacement
• has been stolen
• has not arrived

To cancel your postal vote, email elections@rutland.gov.uk or call our elections team on 01572 720954 by 5pm on 17 April 2024.   If you do not cancel your postal vote by this date, you will not be able to vote at your polling station.

Proxy voting

To vote by proxy, we must receive your application by 5pm on 24 April 2024.
