A task and finish group will be set up to consider the future of Oakham, following the decision to halt the Oakham Town Centre Improvement Scheme.
Acting Leader Oliver Hemsley confirmed last week that the Oakham Town Centre project would be removed from the Council’s Forward Plan with immediate effect and that no more physical work would be undertaken on the project in 2018.
Following the unanimous approval of a motion at Full Council on Monday 15th January, a task and finish group will now be established through the Council’s Growth, Infrastructure and Resources Scrutiny Panel. The purpose of the group will be to consider the future of Oakham town as a whole.
Scrutiny will begin to discuss the formation of the group at its next meeting on Thursday 15th February 2018.
Membership of the group is to be determined but is expected to consist of representatives from within the community, businesses, representative organisations and councillors with an interest in the regeneration of Oakham.
“The creation of a task and finish group to consider the future of Oakham will involve elected members, businesses and the community more closely in determining how the town is developed going forward. One of the main jobs of Scrutiny is to consult with service users, providers and other interested parties on important issues. Following detailed discussions at Monday’s Full Council, Councillors have agreed that a Scrutiny task and finish group which brings together representatives from across the community is the most effective and inclusive way to bring about improvements to our county town. The Growth, Infrastructure and Resources Scrutiny Panel will need time to establish the next steps following this decision but will add the task and finish group as an item at its next available public meeting.”
