Rutland’s annual Armed Forces flag raising will take place at Oakham Castle on Monday 20 June to mark the beginning of national Armed Forces Week.

The event will be attended by Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Sarah Furness and High Sheriff of Rutland Geoff Thompson, together with representatives from Rutland County Council, Oakham Town Council, Uppingham Town Council and the Royal British Legion.

Having been restricted by COVID-19 in each of the past two years, this year’s Armed Forces flag raising is fully open to the public and all are welcome to attend. A short ceremony will take place in the grounds of Oakham Castle from 10.15am, after which the Armed Forces flag will be raised by a party from 7 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps (RLC), stationed at Kendrew Barracks.

Rutland County Council has recently appointed Cllr Paul Ainsley as it’s new Armed Forces Champion. The Council also has a new Armed Forces Officer, Ian Reynolds, who coordinates local support for Armed Forces families and Veterans in Rutland. Ian said:

“Rutland is incredibly proud and supportive of its Armed Forces Community – both those who serve and those who have served. We’re pleased to be able to celebrate the start of Armed Forces Week together again and hope as many people as possible will join us at Oakham Castle on Monday morning, to show their respect and appreciation.”

The Armed Forces community makes up more than 15% of Rutland’s total population, with Reservists accounting for around one sixth of this. Reservists give up their spare time to serve in the Reserve Forces and are ready to support the military when needed. As part of Armed Forces Week, Reservists Day will take place on Wednesday 22 June, recognising their contribution to the Armed Forces. Thursday 23 June will be dedicated to Veterans of all ages and from all branches of the military, with Cadets celebrated on Friday 24 June. Armed Forces Week culminates with National Armed Forces Day on Saturday 25 June.
