Looking for something exciting to do this bank holiday weekend? Escape the gardening and the DIY and join us for our ‘Knights at the Castle’ living history event.
This fun and family-friendly two-day celebration will give visitors of all ages the opportunity to experience all the sights, sounds and smells of Norman and medieval life.
Come and explore 800 years of history and unlock Oakham Castle’s secrets. Watch the ‘Arming of the Knight’ (a demonstration of the way knights were prepared for battle) and find out how each piece of armour was designed both for protection and freedom of movement.
Younger visitors will have the chance to take part in a children's drill and even check out a medieval alchemy lab.
“We’re thrilled that our annual living history weekend is back. This year, we’re going multi-period and celebrating the Castle's 800 year story with loads of things to try, such as archery and even a scaled-down trebuchet; a real one wouldn't fit through our gateway! There will be a medieval encampment to explore, with several characters in period costume re-enacting various elements of domestic life, including cooking, crafts and willow weaving. To add to the atmosphere, visitors can enjoy medieval and Tudor music played on handmade traditional instruments throughout the weekend. We’re coming to the end of our Lottery funding now, so this year it will be a paid entry event. We have to stand on our own two feet by charging a modest entrance fee, so please support us by coming along.”
Charlotte Ridpath, Castle Activities Manager
“The Castle is a hidden gem at the heart of Oakham. As one of the finest surviving examples of Norman domestic architecture anywhere in Europe, it’s a great source of pride for the county. This weekend’s ‘Knights at the Castle’ event will mark two years since the castle finished undergoing a £2million Heritage Lottery-funded restoration, which has seen visitor numbers increase from around 30,000 a year to more than 50,000 visitors in 2017. Family-friendly events like this are a great way of bringing the Castle’s story to life and we’re looking forward to welcoming even more visitors over the summer and beyond.”
Councillor Gordon Brown, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure
