Councillors to Discuss Oakham Task and Finish Group Report

Rutland County Council has put forward a series of recommendations in response to the final report from a community-led working group which has spent the past year looking at possible ways to improve and enhance Oakham.

Oakham Task and Finish Group was established in January 2018 to look at ideas for regenerating the town and has representation from across the community.

A detailed report containing proposals developed by Oakham Task and Finish Group was endorsed by Rutland County Council’s Growth, Infrastructure and Resources Scrutiny Panel in November and is due to be presented to Full Council on 17 December.

Papers published today ahead of the meeting outline the Council’s initial response to Oakham Task and Finish Group’s final report and list a number of recommendations which Councillors will be asked to consider.

Among the recommendations, it is proposed that Councillors agree to the creation of a new Partnership Board that will take the Town Centre work forward to the delivery phase, supported by some initial funding for administration to get the Board started.

It is also recommended that a range of organisations should be represented on the Partnership Board and that the Board would operate independently of the Council but with the ability access any skills and expertise it needs.

“I would again like to thank Oakham Task and Finish Group for their hard work in producing such a comprehensive report. The Council is excited by the task ahead that will deliver a town centre of which the County can be proud. Through the passion and endeavour of the Task and Finish Group they have succeeded in coming up with a range of ideas and recommendations that provide a hugely promising foundation upon which we can build. One of the key recommendations in the report to Councillors is that work to improve and enhance Oakham should continue and be carried forward by a future group – something which I wholeheartedly support. In order to continue to promote the town’s economic prosperity and future wellbeing, it is essential that the informal task and finish partnership that collaborated so successfully continue in some form, made up from different parts of the community and with support from the Council.”
Councillor Oliver Hemsley, Leader of Rutland County Council

Rutland County Council has already begun work to explore the feasibility of some of the recommendations included in the final report from Oakham Task and Finish Group.

“The Task and Finish Group’s final report refers to a number of areas where some work is already being carried out by the Council, for example to look at options for increasing parking in the town and improving local transport. This work will continue, informed and reinforced by the Task and Finish Group’s findings. Other areas of work which fall outside of the Council’s remit would, quite rightly, need to be taken forward by the proposed Partnership Board or a similar body.”
Council Leader Oliver Hemsley

The Full Council meeting at which Oakham Task and Finish Group’s final report will be discussed is due to take place at 7.00pm on Monday 17 December in the Council Chamber.
