Budding Gardeners Can Grow Their Knowledge With New  Project

Date Published: 01 February 2019
Grow Together

A new council-backed project that promotes gardening as a way to improve your health and help communities will be launched at Oakham Castle on Saturday 9 February 2019.

Grow Together is a new volunteer-led scheme for experienced gardeners and those who are new to growing food and plants.

By bringing people together at events where they can learn new skills and share knowledge, Grow Together will encourage more of us to get outdoors and enjoy the health benefits of gardening

“Grow Together encourages you to get outside in the fresh air, meet new people and feel confident about ‘growing your own’. Gardening has so many benefits. It gets you moving, sparks creativity, reduces stress and is a great form of exercise. This is a project for people of all ages and abilities. If you love spending time in your garden then get involved.”
Councillor Lucy Stephenson, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure

Grow Together wants volunteers to help look after community gardens and run activities like plant and seed swaps.

Volunteers will get training to add to their own gardening knowledge, as well support and materials to help them in their roles.

Volunteer for Grown Together

Grow Together is holding a special launch event at Oakham Castle on Saturday 9 February 2019 and budding gardeners of all ages are invited.

As well as seed swap, there will be free newspaper plant pot-making and vegetable art for children, along with presentations from the experienced gardeners behind the project.

Grow Together is run by Rutland County Council’s Active Rutland team and Root-and-Branch Out – a community group offering outdoor learning and play opportunities in partnership with local communities.
