Act of Remembrance to be held at Oakham Castle

Date Published: 03 November 2021
Members of the public are being invited to observe this year’s act of Remembrance in the grounds of Oakham Castle on Thursday 11 November, to commemorate Armistice Day.

At precisely 11.00 am on Armistice Day, a two-minute silence is observed at war memorials and other public spaces throughout the UK. The silence serves as a tribute to those who lost their lives while fighting for their country, marking the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 when guns across Europe fell silent and the First World War ended.

A special act of Remembrance will be held at Oakham Castle from 10.45 am on Thursday 11 November, leading up to the nationally recognised two-minute silence. The commemoration will be led by the Royal British Legion’s Chaplain, Reverend Brian McAvoy.

This public event is open for anyone to attend. While the gathering will take place outside, attendees are reminded of the need to stay safe and follow public health advice in relation to COVID-19. This includes limiting close contact with other people.

As part of wider commemorations, a special civic Remembrance parade will set off from Oakham Castle at 2.00 pm on Sunday 14 November. The parade will include contingents from 7 Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corps, 7 Brigade (The Desert Rats) and 8 Engineer Brigade, along with representatives from the Royal Air Force and local veterans, Cadet, Scout and Girl Guide groups. It will pause at All Saints Church, where a service of Remembrance will be held from 2.30 pm. The service will be followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial on Church Street. The parade will then reform and return along the High Street, where the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Sarah Furness will take the salute.

Once again, this is a public event and all are welcome to watch the parade along Oakham High Street.

As part of the overall Remembrance events, Rutland Concert Band will perform a programme of 'Music for Remembrance' in All Saints' Church, Oakham, at 7:30pm on Saturday 13 November. Tickets for this event cost £5 and may be purchased on the door or via rutlandconcertband@gmail.com. All proceeds from this concert will be donated to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
