Stray dogs

How to report a stray dog

We have a duty to seize unaccompanied dogs found in a public place or on private property where the dog's not been invited.

If you find a stray dog during our office hours, call our customer services team on 01572 722 577 and we'll arrange for a dog warden to come out.

If you find a stray dog outside our office hours, you can call the out of hours service (Monday to Friday 5pm to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 8.30am- 8pm): 0116 269 6177.

The dog warden will make all reasonable attempts to reunite the dog with its owner, if it's wearing a collar and tag or is microchipped.

If the dog warden can't immediately identify the owner, they will safely put the dog in a kennel for up to seven days. The owner will be liable for any costs.

If the dog's not collected within seven days we'll try to re-home it.
