Homes or gardens that are a threat to health

How to report a house or garden that may be a danger to public health

We can take action to deal with homes and gardens that cause (or are likely to cause) health issues or disease.

If an environmental health officer finds that a premises is prejudicial to health, there are legal actions we take to remove and cleanse the area.

Environmental health can take action if:

  • there's rotting or decaying items (such as food) or items likely to contain pathogenic organisms (like an accumulation of faeces, or putrid and foul liquids) - there are exceptions, like manure heaps
  • animals are kept in filthy, disease forming conditions - for example where animals aren't cleaned, or dog mess is never picked up, to the point it causes a health issue
  • the house or garden has rats or mice living there
  • there's an infestation of fleas, bedbugs or cockroaches

We cannot deal with:

  • wasps or ant nests in neighbouring properties
  • untidy or poorly decorated houses, if there's not threat to human health
  • overgrown gardens, if there's not threat to human health
