Explosives
Our licensing service is delivered by Peterborough City Council.
It is an offence to keep explosives (except fireworks for private use) on premises not registered or licensed for the purpose.
Individuals can store up to 5kg of fireworks for private use, for less than 14 days, provided they are kept in a safe place. Suppliers of fireworks, irrespective of the storage period, must be registered / licensed, with the Council, for the storage of explosives (fireworks) in accordance with the Explosives Act 1875, or the Control of Explosives Regulations 1991, and the Keeping of Fireworks Order 1959 as applicable.

Where premises are to store explosives, as defined within the Classification and Labelling of Explosives Regulations 1983, and not solely fireworks within the permitted quantities then a Store Licence must be obtained. A License to store explosives is subject to a prescribed fee. Explosives come in many forms for example:
- blasting substances
- airbags
- fireworks
- black powder
- flares
- ammunition
There is at present a selection of legislation that will/may be relevant to the storage of explosives. Varying bodies, subject to explosive type, location and use, enforce current controls. These may be the Local Authority, the Health and Safety Executive and/or the Police Authority. There are also controls relating to the conveyance of explosives that are not the subject of this service page.
