Child employment and performance licences

Information for employers

You must apply for a work permit within seven days of the child starting work.

You have a duty to keep a record of all school age children you employ. You are responsible for the heath, safety and welfare of children you employ and must make sure they have the appropriate attire for the job they're doing.

You must complete a risk assessment of the work the child will be doing and share this with the child and their parent or carer. You must also share it with us, if requested.

We can prosecute employers if they break the law by:

  • not registering their school aged employees
  • employing school age children in a prohibited occupation listed in the byelaws
  • allowing school aged children to work outside the hours allowed in the byelaws
