Information about council owned trees and tree preservation orders

Council maintained trees

Rutland County Council manage over 80,000 trees across its public open space, adopted highway and other Rutland County Council maintained land. These are generally assessed every five years, which in line with national guidelines. However, certain factors will increase the level of assessment frequency such as the tree’s location, condition, history, and age.

For example, very large, old, trees within falling distance of a busy main road will likely be assessed every three years. Trees displaying features that indicate structural concerns, disease, pests, or disorders, may also be assessed more frequently.

Our Tree Maintenance and Assessment Policy provides more about this.

Tree preservation orders

To find out if a tree has a preservation order or how to apply to carry tree works on trees in conservation areas or with a tree preservation order, visit our Tree works and preservation orders page.

Highway trees

Private trees can sometimes cause an obstruction on the highway. For more information, please visit our Hedges and trees page.
