Starting secondary school in September 2025

The application process for transferring from primary school to secondary school in September 2025 is now open.

• if your child is in year 6 in September 2024 you must submit an application for them to start secondary school in September 2025 by the national closing date
• if your child should be in year 6 but is educated a year behind their natural year group, in year 5, you must still submit an application for secondary school and request that their admission to secondary school is delayed by a year. More information can be found in our deferred entry guidance
• the national closing date for submitting an application is 31 October 2024
• it doesn't matter how soon you submit your application as long as you submit it by the closing date - all applications received by the closing date will be treated equally

Each local authority is responsible for coordinating secondary school admissions for children living in their area who will be in year 6 at primary school in September 2024.

If you live in Rutland

• you must submit your application to us even if you want to apply for a school in another area
• you can apply online by visiting our admissions portal
• our admissions brochure is available to provide you with full details of the application process and details of the schools available to you in Rutland
• if you don't want to submit your application online, you can complete the paper application form. Please note that if you choose this option you will receive your offer of a school place after those parents who apply online as you will need to wait for your offer letter to arrive in the post
