Rutland County Council’s Adult and Community Learning service has recently undergone an Ofsted inspection where the findings have resulted in a ‘Good’ rating for areas focusing on personal development, behaviour and welfare, highlighting the strong support provided to learners and their positive experiences.

While the overall rating for the service is ‘Requires Improvement,’ the council remains optimistic that, with the feedback received, the service can continue to enhance the quality of education and support for adult learners. An improvement and development plan has already been established to focus on the areas identified for improvement, part of which includes taking the adult learning offer out to the Living Well Rutland centres and other community spaces.

The Adult Learning and Community service offers a range of learning opportunities aiming to upskill and boost productivity, pay, jobs and living standards. This includes English, Maths and IT, first aid, a variety of arts and crafts and languages.

Amongst the findings, it has been documented that our well-qualified and experienced tutors help learners grow in confidence and learn new skills. Tutors provide a lot of support and help learners to believe in their ability to achieve. Learners said that they feel safe, which is thanks to the team’s caring and supportive nature.

It was also found that the accredited functional skills English and mathematics courses are very suitably aligned with learners’ goals and needs and provide them well with the required knowledge and skills.

“I am pleased, though not surprised, that the findings highlight the strong dedication of our staff and the exceptional support provided to our learners.

“While there are areas for improvement, the feedback from Ofsted provides a clear path for ongoing development, strengthening our commitment to delivering high-quality education and support to the community.

“To drive this progress forward, our development and improvement plan will help us to focus on the identified areas for improvement, ensuring we continue to enhance the learning experience for all.”

Councillor Christine Wise, Cabinet Member for Transport, Environment and Communities at Rutland County Council
