School cycling programme set to resume across Rutland

Rutland County Council (RCC), in partnership with Uppingham Community College (UCC), is pleased to announce the continuation of the Bikeability Programme across schools in Rutland.
This national initiative equips children with essential road safety awareness and practical cycling skills, supporting their development into safer, more confident cyclists.
The 2025/26 Bikeability programme will get underway from 1 April, with Rutland County Council, Uppingham Community College (UCC) and the Rutland School Sports Partnership working closely together.
Rutland County Council remains the recipient for Active Travel England grants that fund the Bikeability programme. Delivery of practical cycling sessions for children will be overseen by UCC and the School Sports Partnership. This new collaboration reflects the Council's desire to work more closely with the School Sports Partnership, to strengthen the delivery of sports in schools across the county.
The programme will continue to offer a range of courses, including combined Level 1/2 and Level 3 Bikeability training, as well as Learn to Ride courses for children in Years 5 and 6. These courses provide students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to cycle safely and independently.
"We are pleased to be continuing to offer the Bikeability programme to children across Rutland, ensuring that young people have the opportunity to develop their cycling skills. Not only does learning to cycle safely encourage healthier lifestyles, but it also promotes independent and sustainable travel.”
Cllr Christine Wise, Rutland County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport, and Communities
"We are delighted to be able to deliver Bikeability for the young people in Rutland Primary Schools. The Schools Sports Partnership Manager Chris Thomas and the team of instructors are very experienced with this programme and I know they are looking forward to launching after the Easter break."
Ben Solly, Principal at Uppingham Community College
