His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Rutland County Council and The Royal British Legion invite residents to attend Remembrance events taking place in the County from Friday 8 to Monday 11 November 2024.

In addition to Rutland’s two army bases, there are military personnel living in the County who serve elsewhere, as well as reservists, and many veterans and military families. One in five Rutland residents have some kind of connection to the Armed Forces.

Festival of Remembrance

On Friday 8 November His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness, has organised Rutland’s third Festival of Remembrance in the Pavilion at Rutland Hall Hotel.  This event will consist of a reception at 6.30pm and a concert at 7.30pm. The evening promises pipers, a band, saxophones, choirs and members of the military talking about their lives.

All profits from this event will be donated to the Rutland Branch of the Royal British Legion for the Poppy appeal. This is a ticketed event and tickets can be purchased via the Rutland Lieutenancy website.

Music for Remembrance

On Saturday 9 November, at 7.30pm, All Saints Church in Oakham will host the Rutland Concert Band, with a guest appearance by award winning soprano Katie Marshall.

This annual Music for Remembrance event is a poignant way to mark Remembrance Day. The concert features a range of music with the central theme being Remembrance and all proceeds will be donated to the Poppy Appeal. Members of the public are encouraged to attend. Tickets costing £5 can be purchased upon arrival.

Service of Remembrance

On Sunday 10 November, the County Service of Remembrance will take place at 2.30pm in All Saints Church, Oakham. Starting at 2pm, Military Units, Cadets, Scouts, Guides, voluntary organisations and Armed Forces veterans will parade to the Church, from Oakham Castle along the High Street.

The church service will conclude with a Wreath Laying Ceremony, after which, the parade will march back to the Castle, with The Lord-Lieutenant taking the Salute on Oakham High Street. All members of the public are warmly invited to attend the Service and should be seated in All Saints’ Church by 2.15pm.

Churches across Rutland will be holding their own Remembrance Services, please check with your local church, for further details.

Armistice Day

At 10.45am on Monday 11 November, there will be a short Service of Remembrance in the grounds of Oakham Castle, to mark the moment when Armistice was declared. This service will include a minute’s silence at 11.00am.

The service will be conducted by Venerable John Ellis CB, former Chaplain in Chief to the Royal Air Force, and representatives of local military units and veterans’ organisations will be present. All members of the public are invited to attend.

“Remembrance is particularly important in our County with its large serving military population and large military veteran population. Our Rutland events will be a fitting tribute to all those who have and continue to serve our Country and keep us secure.”

His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness

“I hope that many of you can support this year’s Poppy Appeal and attend some of the events taking place in Rutland to recognise the huge sacrifices made by so many during wars and conflicts on our behalf. As is often said, for our tomorrow, they gave their today."

Cllr David Wilby, Rutland County Council’s Armed Forces Champion
