The honours system recognises people who have made a significant contribution in public life or committed themselves to serving and helping Britain.
Anyone can nominate a friend or family member to receive an honour. They are awarded to people in a wide variety of fields, including sports, the arts, science and education.
Honours are intended to recognise outstanding achievements such as long-term voluntary service, innovation and entrepreneurship or displaying moral courage.
