Preventing terrorism

About the Prevent Duty, which aims to prevent people from getting involved in extremist views, supporting terrorism or committing acts of terrorism

The purpose of Prevent is to safeguard and support people to stop them from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism of any form. It aims to:

  • tackle the causes of radicalisation and respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism
  • safeguard and support those most at risk of radicalisation through early intervention, identifying them and offering support
  • support those who have already engaged in terrorism to disengage and rehabilitate

Leicestershire and Rutland's Prevent Strategy aims to prevent violent and non-violent extremism, but is also very much about protecting our communities and supporting vulnerable people who may be targeted by extremists trying to recruit or radicalise them.

There is no single profile of a person who may be vulnerable to grooming by extremists, and the Prevent programme relies on community support and information to identify and safeguard people.

You can find more information, including advice and support, on the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland's Prevent website or the Leicestershire Police website.
