Digital switchover of telephone services
What is the digital switchover?
Simply put, the old analogue copper based telephone network is being replaced by digitally based technology. Most users will be able to keep their current telephones and phone numbers.
The final date for completion of the switchover has been set as January 2027. Responsibility for the changeover is with your telecommunication services provider, normally either BT or their provider partner, however, you should check that they have this process in hand.
Telecare services
If you or a relative or friend has a Telecare Monitoring Service, the switchover of these services will be managed by your care provider.
Please also refer to the Rutland Telecare Choice page for more information.
In Rutland, the majority of the Telecare Services are provided by Amplius (formerly Longhurst Group). More information can be found on the Amplius website or by contacting them directly.
Other telephone users
If you have a broadband service, the switchover will happen very easily. You will be asked by your provider to plug your existing telephone into your broadband router instead of the landline wall socket.
However, you should be aware that this service does not normally have a backup in case of power failure, if you are concerned then please contact your provider, they will be able to provide a battery backup option for you.
If you do not have a broadband service, most providers will be able to offer an interim solution to enable you to continue to operate your phone only service. Please check directly with your provider.
Further information
For most users the change should be very straightforward. If you are concerned then please contact your phone service provider or for further detailed information on the switchover please refer to the Openreach website.
