Recycling should now be part of our everyday routine. A recent waste composition analysis of black bins showed that 16% of Rutland’s household waste is recyclables that could be put in the grey recycling bin for kerbside collection. Recyclables that were found in black bins include cardboard, metal, glass and plastic.

Recycle more at home, school and work
The easiest way to recycle more at home is by making sure you put the correct items into your grey recycling bin and recycling as many of these items as possible.
- read our Grey bin guide to find out what items you should be putting in your grey bin, and those you shouldn't - we also have a handy Waste and recycling A to Z to help you find out what items you can put in each bin
- keep a recycling bag or box next to your kitchen bin - when it's full, empty it into your grey bin for collection.
- flatten any cardboard boxes you may have, allowing you to fit more into your grey bin, and don't forget the toilet roll tubes and junk mail
- schools and workplaces will have recycling bins, so encourage your family to get involved
- not all recyclable items can go in your grey bin (check the label on the packaging) but many large supermarkets now have facilities to take these items, so you can drop them off next time you go shopping - keep a separate container next to your bin for these items
- visit the Recycle Now website for more information on how to recycle
Think when you shop
- plan your weekly meals and make a list - this will keep you focused at the supermarket and not buy anything you do not need
- don't forget to take your own bags with you so you don't have to buy plastic bags at the checkout
- try to buy refills - they are usually cheaper and way better for the environment
- avoid any excess packaging, buying loose fruit and vegetables if you can, and always try to choose products that are packaged in recyclable materials
- switch from disposable items - rechargeable batteries, low energy light bulbs and replaceable razor heads are a great way to start
Keep it clean, dry and loose
- keep it clean - it's important that anything that you put in your grey bin is clean, so that it doesn't contaminate the rest of the load - rinse out any containers, packaging and bottles
- keep it dry - leave your rinsed out items to dry before adding them to your grey bin
- keep it loose - please don't bag any items in your recycling as this makes them difficult to process
