Many of the paintings were kindly bequeathed to the museum by Mary Roope, a lifelong Rutlander. Many locals will remember her as a former head teacher of St. Nicholas Primary School, Cottesmore and also for her involvement with many local charities. Amongst her collection are a number of watercolours by Arthur Edward Wade (Mary’s uncle), a renowned botanist for over 55 years. He was also an accomplished watercolourist and his paintings from the 1920s through to the 1980s depict several Rutland villages including Bisbrooke, Cottesmore, Empingham and Wakerley.
Also included in the exhibition are prints taken from a pair of original sketchbooks in the collection. The sketchbooks, dating from 1888 to 1894, belonged to George Arthur Marshall Baker (a grandson of Richard Westbrook Baker, the foremost agriculturalist of his day). They include many scenes of Langham as well as Exton, Burley Park and Oakham.
