Museum Collections

The Museum's original collections were those transferred to it when it was set up by the former Rutland County Council in 1967. These were the rural life collection of Mr E G Bolton from Casterton Secondary Modern School and the mainly archaeological collection from Oakham School.

The Museum now has an extensive rural life collection which includes farm tools, tractors, wagons and a wide range of rural tradesmen's tools.
Domestic and social history material is also on display along with a large collection of archaeological material found within Rutland.

Although there is not enough room for all of our collections on display permanently, we do have a temporary exhibition programme. This is where we try to get out some of our objects from the stores. For example, the Top to Toe exhibition showcased some of our fashion accessories.

From time to time we do change our displays. This is to allow for other items to be displayed, but also for some to be removed to allow for maintenance. This is our 1949 Ferguson tractor being removed by some of our volunteers into our workshop.

The majority of the Museums collections have a Rutland history. However, there have been occasions in the past where items have been accepted where their history has been unknown or from another County. We have therefore produced a disposals report which has been approved by Rutland County Councils Cabinet Committee. This report lists 27 items which no longer fit in with our collecting policy.

Now that the Cabinet has approved the disposal of these items, we are now looking for suitable new homes for these. As we are an Accredited Museum we are required to offer the items first to other Museums or other preservation societies. If we are unable to find a new home where these items will remain in the public domain we may then offer to other interested parties. You can view the disposal report here.
If you would like further details about the disposal project or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Collections Manager at the Museum museum@rutland.gov.uk.
