Direct Payments


The aim of a Direct Payment is to enable people who are eligible for social care services to have more control over their lives, promoting independence, choice and inclusion.

Direct Payments are part of Rutland County Council's plans for Putting People First


What is a Direct Payment?

Instead of receiving services which have been organised by Rutland County Council, you could receive cash payments to make your own care arrangements. These are called Direct Payments.

A Direct Payment can be used to meet all, or part of your support or care needs. If you want a Direct Payment for only part of your support, Rutland County Council could arrange services for the rest of it.

A Direct Payment is about you having control over the support or care you receive.

Who can receive a Direct Payment?

You may be eligible for a Direct Payment if you are: 
• An older person who needs support to live independently and safely in your own home community 
• A disabled person aged 16 or over (as defined by the National Assistance Act 1948) 
• A person with eligible needs who is HIV positive or has AIDS 
• A person with parental responsibility for a child 
• A Carer aged 16 or over 


What can you have a Direct Payment for?

Direct Payments can be used to purchase any social care services that you have been assessed as needing with the exception of permanent residential care.

Examples include:
• A Personal Assistant
• To purchase care from an agency
• Short break/Respite care
• Day time activities
• Services to support carers
Equipment to help you remain in our own home.
