Openreach engineers working on behalf of Digital Rutland have already started to install the technology that will see superfast fibre broadband become available across exchanges throughout Rutland by the end of September.

Local residents may have noticed fibre cables being laid and new green cabinets being put in place in towns and villages across the county, which when connected will provide properties with access to download speeds of up to 80Mbps.

The new cabinets will now go through the process of being commissioned before being ready for switch on, and Digital Rutland hopes to announce soon which communities will be the first to receive fibre broadband.

Volunteers needed for Digital Rutland Case Study

Are you planning to get fibre broadband as soon it becomes available in your area? Are you excited about the benefits it will bring to you or your business?

If so, we'd like to hear from you as we are looking for a handful of residents and businesses to use as a case study.

If you are interested in taking part, please email digitalrutland@rutland.gov.uk

What happens now?

12 weeks of survey work is nearing completion and this work makes sure Digital Rutland quickly knows exactly what infrastructure is in place.

Technology including fibre cables and new green cabinets are being put in place in towns and villages across the county.

Digital Rutland hopes to make the 1st announcements about which areas will get fibre broadband first during the next few weeks.

It's hoped the 1st exchanges could start being upgraded during the summer months with up to 6,000 properties connected by September, and the majority of the 17,000 properties in Rutland having access to superfast broadband (speeds up to 80Mbps) by the end of 2013.

More 'hard to reach' properties, such as isolated farmhouses or rural premises will receive at least 2Mbps and some of this work may involve alternative technologies during early 2014.
