Parking Review Update

High Street PicturesA number of changes to parking arrangements in Rutland will take place shortly after Councillors moved a step closer to agreeing new guidelines for both towns.

Members of Cabinet (Tuesday 15 November) gave their approval to a draft parking policy that outlines how the council will manage parking in both Oakham and Uppingham.

Councillor Roger Begy, Portfolio Holder for Highways commented: “Officers will now work on the finer detail of the policy and come up with a final document that sets out the council position.  It’s really important that we get this right as we want to solve any issues that exist, rather than move them from one part of town to another.”

Councillor Begy added: “I’d like to publicly thank everybody who contributed to the two parking review groups in Oakham and Uppingham.  A lot of the evidence supplied has been taken into account when putting together a parking policy for the county”.

Councillors agreed to carry out one road improvement immediately as it was felt the current situation was dangerous and could be easily solved.  As a result, double yellow lines will be painted on the bend of Stamford Road and also opposite the Edmonton Way junction.

Other short-term actions are in the draft report, but subject to change, including reviewing residents’ bays, increasing the duration of short-stay car parking, giving parking wardens the power to issue parking tickets for those parked alongside a dropped kerb, and tackling specific problem areas in both towns.

Two working groups met during August in Oakham and Uppingham.  The groups were made up of County Councillors, Council Officers, members of scrutiny panels and invited guests.  The meetings attempted to gather ideas for solutions and not just information about parking problems.

Following the meeting this morning, council officers will now produce a final set of policies that will determine what measures are taken in the coming months and years.
